About Orthodontics

Orthodontics is not just about straightening teeth. It is about achieving the beautiful, healthy smile you deserve for confidence that lasts a lifetime. Orthodontic treatment may not only improve your smile, but it can improve your health!

Advances in Orthodontic Treatment

There has never been a better time to consider orthodontic treatment at any age!  Technology has significantly advanced the field of orthodontics, and there are so many options available to our patients.  Dr. Carter uses digital imaging and a detailed examination to create a customized treatment plan that results in a beautiful smile, a well-functioning bite and healthy jaw joints.  Teeth move to their determined positions with gentle, constant force that is carefully controlled.  The latest materials are so advanced, and designed to move teeth more efficiently with greater comfort.  Teeth that are better positioned are easier to keep clean!  An accurate bite improves jaw function, increases chewing efficiency, provides long-term health to the jaw muscles and joints, and sustains the health of the gum tissue.

Dr. Carter and his team pride themselves on offering excellent customer service and an exceptional orthodontic experience to all patients.  It is their goal to provide the highest quality orthodontic treatment in a professional, caring and fun environment where patients are the top priority and where getting braces is a pleasant experience!  We offer traditional silver braces, or a more aesthetic clear option.  There are even removable options! Patients may often choose colors for their braces.

Your Treatment Time

Dr. Carter will discuss your treatment time with you, as orthodontic treatment times can vary. Several factors may affect your custom treatment time, but overall the average treatment time is about 18-24 months. The best way to stay on track to a successful treatment plan is stay involved, and be an active participant in your plan. This means schedule and attend all appointments on time so that can help you meet your goals.

Before your journey begins, schedule your first complimentary visit with Dr. Carter!  He will provide a complete clinical diagnosis regarding the nature of the concern, a written summary of the findings, and a detailed plan that outlines your treatment, goals, and estimated fees.

Two-Phase Treatment

Dr. Carter follows the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that children visit an orthodontist at the first sign of an orthodontic problem, and no later than age 7. By then, a child has enough permanent teeth to determine whether an orthodontic problem exists or is developing. The goal of early treatment is to correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems. Early treatment also helps to make room for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of extractions in the future.

Some orthodontic conditions that develop at a young age can have long-term, permanent effects if not treated. Dr. Carter will perform a complimentary exam and discuss with you specifically what your child needs. In most situations, this will simply be to continue to monitor the development of the patient’s teeth.

Early treatment isn’t always necessary. However, interceptive treatment or phase I treatment sometimes allows Dr. Carter to achieve results using methods that are less invasive when employed as a child is growing. Once the face and jaws are fully formed, additional treatment may be necessary. Examples of orthodontic concerns that are sometimes corrected with early treatment include: severe crowding, habits, open bite, deep bite, crossbite, large “overbite,” underbite, narrow jaws, and severely protruded front teeth.

The easiest way to find out what your child needs is to schedule a complimentary new patient exam with Dr. Carter! Call us today to reserve your appointment!
